What Brought me to Business

Solar Eclipse, not from June 10th 2021.

Last night while I couldn’t sleep, I started writing this in my head. The last 3 nights I haven’t been sleeping, more than usual so I’ll blame it on the Solar Eclipse because Instagram astrologers said so.

Recently, I tried creating a content plan with prompts I found on pinterest but it only lasted a week. A lot of the questions were “why” questions. I noticed myself getting prickly at the thought of answer the question. Like why would you start a business anonymous social media advisor. My full Italian mobster voice started coming out.

I realized why I don’t like why questions last night when I should have been asleep. Why questions are accusatory. I learned this in grad school and over and over again through trainings and certifications and sessions. Why questions, unless used with a soft tone push us into defensiveness.

But the question “What brought you to start a business?” Now that one I can answer, not briefly, but I can answer it. So many reasons.

What brought me to start a business?

I decided to start my business because working for myself meant freedom. Freedom from problematic non-profits that I don’t align with, rules and ideas of professionalism that I didn’t get to set. Freedom to create products and services that speak to others.

I started my coaching business because I could feel stagnation, like many, at the start of the pandemic. But more than that, I started my businesses because I’ve been doing this, coaching, healing, supporting since I was a child. Yes, really. But whether is was my friend’s photography businesses, collecting the family stories, playing mediator between my brothers; I’ve been doing this since way before grad school.

This business is my opportunity to be who I am in the most authentic way.

Owning a business is also part of my ancestral inheritance. My great great grandfather Tovar had a mechanic shop in San Antonio. He fixed cars. His wife my great great grandmother Juanita took care of everyone around her, especially through food. In a way I combined those two. People, unlike cars, are not broken. They don’t yet realize their power and strengths and just need a little food for the soul.

My businesses allow me to be creative; another legacy from my great grandmother. In my businesses I am able to show up fully as myself. I work with clients I want to, while getting to support their dreams.

So the real question is, how could I not start a business or two?
